I dwell in possibility–

We’re honored to announce Emily, a new musical work inspired by her poems and letters, starring Susan Derry—a longtime muse of Conner & Smith.

At a moment when the nation once again feels deeply divided and women’s voices remain vital to our cultural conversation, The Emily Dickinson Project invites audiences into the inner world of one of America’s greatest literary minds. Through music, orchestration, imagery, movement, and immersive projections, the project explores the imagination and creative spirit behind Dickinson’s extraordinary poetry, revealing the humanity, wit, longing, and rebellion in her words.

Rather than presenting Dickinson as a distant historical figure, The Emily Dickinson Project brings her vividly to life for modern audiences, allowing her poetry to speak across generations with renewed urgency and emotional power.

This project is being developed independently—those curious to learn more are warmly invited to follow along.

About ‘Emily:’

We begin in a white space, filled with possibilities. The poet on the stage invites the audience into her imagination with “I dwell in possibility–,” enhanced by projections evoking her limitless creativity. Throughout the experience we combine music, projections and dance into a world of a streaming consciousness, as we step into the mind of one of America’s greatest literary minds–Emily Dickinson.

Emily Dickinson is considered one of the most important voices in American literature, yet during her lifetime only about 10 of her nearly 1,800 poems were published anonymously and often heavily edited. Writing in quiet isolation in Amherst, Massachusetts, Dickinson created deeply personal and groundbreaking poetry that explored death, love, nature, faith, and the inner life with a voice unlike any other of her time. Her work challenged the conventions of 19th century poetry and helped redefine what American poetry could be, inspiring generations of writers and readers long after her death.
